Lizard Island Georgian Bay

The Lizard is a distinctive island located on the western edge of the Cognashene community in Georgian Bay, Ontario. Spanning approximately 2.8 acres (1.1 hectares), this small yet ecologically significant island is celebrated for its unique landscapes and rich biodiversity.

Ecological Significance

Despite its compact size, The Lizard boasts an impressive 105+ plant species and a diverse range of habitats. Its open bedrock terrain is interspersed with natural crevices and depressions that retain rainwater, supporting unique ecosystems such as:

  • Open Rock Barren:
Exposed granite surfaces that dominate the landscape.
  • Isolated Bogs and Raised Ponds:
Small wetlands that nurture specialized plant species.
  • Coastal Meadow Marshes:
High-diversity areas featuring rare species like Stiff Yellow Flax (Linum medium var. medium), a Great Lakes endemic.
  • Wooded Pockets:
Scattered groves of White Pine, Red Maple, and White Birch add to the island’s ecological charm.

Conservation Efforts

In 2001, the island was donated to the Georgian Bay Land Trust by the McCarthy family. Since then, the Trust has worked to preserve its pristine condition, focusing on:

  • Habitat Protection: Safeguarding its rare species and ecosystems.
  • Low-Impact Recreation: Allowing visitors to enjoy the island while maintaining its natural integrity.
